Women Who Rock Columbus: Sofi

The next woman highlighted in the series is a talented musician who is tearing up the Columbus scene with her smokey vocals and energetic stage presence. She, along with the band Blucone have become emerging talents in the local scene.

Allow me to introduce you to Sofi!

Sofi, lead singer of Blucone

Sofi is the lead singer of Blucone. Her voice reminds me of a mix of Norah Jones and Billie Eilish and blends so well with the indie pop, RnB sound/vibe that is the Blucone experience.

Let's get to know a little bit more about her and her role.

1. When did your interest in music begin?

"I started singing at a young age in church, so that’s really where it started. I was *always* singing around the house and everywhere I went! I then did choir in middle school and found out about a cappella! My high school had this a cappella group and so when I was a freshman, I auditioned and got in and my love and passion for performing and music in general grew even more from there!"

2. Who has been the biggest influence in your musical style?

"There have been so many influences throughout my life. I would say recently it’s been Billie Eilish, Benee, and Mereba!"

3. Tell us about Blucone and your role within the band.

"Blucone is what I would call “bedroom pop” with indie, RnB, and alternative influences! I remember getting a message about 3 years ago from our drummer, Ben, asking if I wanted to be apart of a band as the lead singer! At the time, I was dying to make music and be apart of something so it was perfect timing. The first time we made music was exciting and fun and has been ever since, with my main role as the songwriter and creating melodies and harmonies, etc. I love it so much and it’s amazing to be able to express myself through music alongside amazing friends."

4.  What has been the highlight of your career so far?

"There have been so many highlights so far, like playing at the Newport Music Hall, meeting incredible artists, and just creating cool music, but I think the biggest highlight of my career so far personally is being able to recognize and see my own personal growth as a performer from when we begun to now. I sometimes criticize myself after performances, thinking “I should’ve been moving more” or “I should’ve said this instead of that” or “that note was pitchy” (lol). but then I look back and I actually SEE the growth and the improvement in just a few years. It makes me excited to imagine what’s to come in the future!"

5. On the other side of that, in your opinion, what has been the most challenging part of your career up to this point?

"I think along the same lines as what I said in the last question, being overly critical of myself has been challenging still. Alongside of that, balancing everyday life/work/school and music/performing has been challenging."

6. Where do you hope to see music take you in 5 years?

"I would hope that in 5 years we have an album or two released, that we get to travel and tour around the nation and meet new people and be able to share our music with as many people as possible!"

Blucone and Sofi play Newport Music Hall, June 2024.

7. Give me one band (local or national) or song everyone should hear right now.

"Everyone should listen to Snarls!!"

8. Do you have any words of wisdom you'd like to pass along to your fellow females in the music business?

"I would say stick to your gut and don’t be afraid to speak up! We’re worth it and awesome and sexy and cool!"

I have to give a huge shoutout and thank you to Sofi for not only being a part of this series but also for coming out and doing our shoot, outside, on what was probably the hottest day of 2025 so far. It's been incredible to watch her and Blucone's journey over the past year!
